The Danube carved Vienna into existence long before Habsburg crowns or Ringstrasse boulevards. For two millennia the river served as Rome's northern frontier, a liquid highway for grain barges and salt traders, and the artery that fed the imperial capital's appetite for marble, timber, and Bohemian glass.
By 1529 Ottoman siege engineers had mapped every bend; by 1873 the World's Fair anchored pavilions along its banks. Today the Danube flows 350 kilometres through Austria, but only the Vienna stretch threads between Leopoldsberg's forested slopes and the oil refineries of Schwechat, a 30-kilometre corridor where the river splits into channels, islands, and the narrow Donaukanal that slices through the first district.
